Royal Ease Guanyin Statue (Zizai Guanyin)

Description

The open space beneath the resting arm is part of this Guanyin’s appeal. The raised knee, loosely draped robes and hand set beside the body create a relaxed, asymmetrical silhouette. A crown and necklace frame the lowered eyes, while the folded leg keeps the composition close to the surface on which it sits.

Why “Royal Ease” and “Zizai”?

Royal ease is the name for this open seated posture, with one knee raised and an arm resting upon it. The loosely draped robes and the hand beside the body reinforce that unforced quality. Zizai Guanyin (自在观音) conveys being at ease in Chinese and names the same subject here.

The design is also called Shuiyue, or Water Moon Guanyin, a traditional subject associated with contemplating the moon reflected in water. Zizai Quan Yin keeps the focus on the open posture, without a tall rock backdrop, so the body and its surrounding space define the silhouette.

A miniature or a more substantial display

The smallest version is only 6.5 cm (2.6 in) high. It is a miniature accent for a small shelf or desk. The medium version is 11 cm (4.3 in) tall, and the large version reaches 20.2 cm (8.0 in), with a length of 21 cm (8.3 in) across the seated figure. The separate size photographs show differences in facial modelling, crown details and robe texture; the larger versions are not simply identical enlargements of the miniature.

The material is listed by the supplier as Qingsha stone (青砂石). Its gray tone and granular surface give the robes and crown a quiet contrast against wood or a light-colored shelf. Each purchase includes one statue in the selected size. Multi-statue photographs show the sizes together for comparison; furniture and background props are not included.

Set the figure on a level indoor surface with room for the extended hand. Support it underneath when lifting, and use a soft, dry brush to remove dust around the crown, necklace and folds.
