Bajiaozuo Guanyin on an Octagonal Pedestal

$799.00

An eight-sided pedestal gives this seated Guanyin a distinct, architectural base. Above it, deeply lined lotus petals, a slender vase and flowing robes are finished in glossy Dehua white porcelain. At 43 cm (16.9 in) tall, the figure makes a substantial focal point for a home altar.

Description

The base is what sets this Bajiaozuo Guanyin statue apart. Rounded lotus petals rise above an eight-sided pedestal decorated with scrolling relief. Their soft curves meet the crisp outline of the foot, giving the seated figure a balanced, grounded composition.

A small sprig rests between the fingers of the raised hand; the other palm supports a slender vase. Fine bead ornaments cross the chest, and a small seated figure appears within the crown. The white glaze lets the shadows of the robe folds and the grooves in the lotus petals carry the detail.

The Bajiaozuo Name

Bajiaozuo is the supplier’s Chinese name, 八角座, referring to the octagonal seat. Daiyutang identifies this Dehua design as a work by Lin Xiaocai.

The octagonal foot gives Bajiaozuo Kwan Yin a more architectural foundation than a simple round lotus seat. Leave the lower edge visible when arranging the figure so that the contrast between the eight sides and rounded petals remains part of the view.
