Description

The wheel in Guanyin’s hand gives this figure its distinctive focus. Small and open at the center of the composition, it sits below her lowered gaze, while the raised right hand balances the long fall of the robes. Gold-tone ornament traces the collar, drapery and broad lotus petals.

Putuo and the Meaning of the Wheel

Putuo Guanyin (普陀观音) refers to Guanyin’s association with Mount Putuo, the island off China’s Zhejiang coast that has long been a place of Buddhist pilgrimage. Guanyin, also known as Kuan Yin, embodies compassion. The name connects this image with that devotional tradition.

The Dharma wheel represents Buddhist teaching. Its open spokes form a small, precise detail against the colored robes, making it the identifying held object of this painted brass Kuan Yin. The raised hand balances the wheel across the upright figure.

Painted Brass, from Crown to Lotus

Cast in brass using the lost-wax method, this standing Putuo Kuan Yin is made in Tongling, Anhui. Red-orange robes, green drapery and gold-tone details give the figure a rich presence without obscuring its sculpted folds. The smooth back of the robe offers a quieter view of the form.

The four sizes have their own proportions and finishing details. In particular, the 48 cm version has a more gold-toned hood and chest, with a softer green lower robe. Select a height to see its matching photograph; the detailed gallery and video show the 38 cm version.
