Description

From the front, the eye moves from the fish’s sweeping tail to the dragon’s expressive head, then up to Guanyin’s still face. Her raised palm and small, downward-pointing water vessel are framed by flowing robes. The broad dragonfish extends to either side of her crossed legs, giving each part of the sculpture room to be seen.

Why a Dragonfish?

This dragonfish Guanyin statue takes its name from the creature’s dragon-like head and scaled fish body. In Chinese, this mythical creature is called aoyu (鳌鱼); Guanyin depicted with it is known as Aoyu Guanyin. The name identifies the distinctive creature supporting the figure.

Aoyu Kuan Yin places a composed seated figure above a particularly animated mount. The sweeping fish tail extends to either side, while the lifted dragon head brings the eye back toward the raised hand. A side view reveals the difference between the fish’s broad body and Guanyin’s upright posture.

Brass, with Detail on Every Side

Made in brass, the sculpture has a warm yellow-gold appearance with darker recesses that bring out the layered robes, fish scales and facial features. The robes continue around the back, making it rewarding to view from more than one angle.

It measures approximately 19.5 cm high × 19.5 cm wide × 9 cm deep (7.7 × 7.7 × 3.5 in), with an approximate weight of 1.25 kg (2.76 lb). The broad form has a relatively shallow footprint for a shelf or indoor altar. Dimensions and weight may vary slightly.
