Copper Willow Guanyin Statue on a Lotus Throne

Description

The lotus throne is a large part of this sculpture’s character. Rounded upright petals support the crossed legs, while a lower ring opens outward toward the base. Above them, the hood, shoulders and deeply folded sleeves lead the eye back to Guanyin’s face. Reddish copper highlights make the raised ornament visible against the darker recesses.

The Willow and the Water Vase

Willow Guanyin describes Guanyin with a willow branch, known in Chinese as Yangliu Guanyin (杨柳观音). The branch and water vase are longstanding attributes of the bodhisattva of compassion. In devotional imagery, the willow is used to sprinkle the vase’s pure water, expressing compassion and relief from suffering.

The right fingers hold a curled sprig while the left palm supports a tilted, narrow-necked vase. Those small gestures sit above the broad double lotus throne. The seated Yangliu Quan Yin combines this familiar willow imagery with a deep copper tone that highlights the raised folds and petals.

A Size That Belongs in Your Space

The compact version stands 22.5 cm (8.9 in) high, including its lotus base. At the other end of the range, the 48.2 cm (19.0 in) statue has a 34 cm (13.4 in) base and weighs about 15.5 kg (34.17 lb). The larger sizes need a broad, stable supporting surface; the smaller figure is easier to place on a personal shrine or display shelf.

Copper from Tongling

Cast in copper in Tongling, Anhui, the figure has a warm reddish-brown surface rather than a yellow brass finish. Side lighting brings out the curves of the lotus petals and the fine borders of the robe. Keep it indoors in a dry setting where the expression and hand-held details can be seen comfortably.
