Nianzhu Guanyin Holding Prayer Beads

Description

This Nianzhu Guanyin statue draws attention to a small gesture: one hand lowers a strand of prayer beads against the robe. The round beads and hanging tassel stand out from the broad, smooth folds. A glossy white glaze follows the whole figure, from the raised crown to the flared hem.

Nianzhu: Guanyin with Prayer Beads

Nianzhu (念珠) means prayer beads, used to keep count during Buddhist recitation. On this Nianzhu Kwan Yin, the beads and tassel are sculpted against the robe. Their small, repeated forms contrast with the long uninterrupted folds around them.

The Shape of the Porcelain

The robe falls close to the body before opening at the feet, forming the base of the figure. There is no separate lotus pedestal. From behind, the hood and robe form a smooth, continuous outline; from the front, the crown, necklace and prayer beads supply the detail. The white porcelain and Dehua origin place this piece within the Blanc de Chine tradition.

A Tall Figure with a Modest Footprint

The approximate overall measurements are 45.5 cm (17.9 in) high, 17 cm (6.7 in) long and 14 cm (5.5 in) wide. Allow clearance above the crown and space around the base when selecting a shrine, shelf or display cabinet. A simple background helps the outline and white-glazed details remain visible.

Included and Care

Includes one white porcelain Guanyin statue. The beads are a sculpted part of the figure, not a separate wearable strand. Keep the statue indoors on a level surface and support it from below when moving it. Dust gently with a soft brush, taking care around the fingers and beads.
