Willow Branch Guanyin Statue in Brass

Description

Look closely at the contrast between the smooth face and the fine patterns along the robes. Polished highlights follow the hands and garment edges; deeper tea-gold tones settle into the folds. The broad lotus petals give the seated figure a rounded, generous silhouette, while a small Buddha relief crowns the headdress.

The Willow Branch and the Water Vase

Willow Branch Guanyin takes its name from the branch raised in her right hand. This familiar form is also called Yangzhi Guanyin (杨枝观音): yangzhi means willow branch. Together with the water vase, it belongs to a long tradition of representing Guanyin’s compassion and the relief of suffering. Kuan Yin is another spelling of Guanyin, the bodhisattva known in Sanskrit as Avalokiteshvara.

The branch is held lightly beside the face, while the narrow vase rests over the lap. Their small scale contrasts with the broad lotus throne and patterned robes of Yangzhi Kuan Yin. A close view brings those fine gestures into focus within the substantial seated figure.

Brass with an Antique Tea-Tone Finish

Made in Tongling, Anhui, this figure combines lost-wax brass casting with hand chasing. Its antique tea-tone finish moves between warm gold and darker brown, with brighter areas on the face and hands. The engraved borders, layered drapery and sculpted lotus petals can be appreciated from the front or either side; the video also reveals the quieter folds across the back.
