Guanyin in Royal Ease on Openwork Rocks

Open spaces run through the tall rock formation beneath Guanyin, giving this boxwood carving a striking silhouette. Above it, one arm rests on a raised knee and a round halo frames the face. The two heights offer a slender focal point for a shelf, collection or personal altar.

Description

This royal ease Guanyin statue balances a relaxed seated figure with an elaborate landscape below. The robe falls in long folds over the upper rocks; farther down, irregular openings let the dark background show through the warm wood. Turn the carving and the pattern of solid wood and open space changes with the angle.

At ease above the rocks

Royal ease describes the raised knee with an arm resting upon it. Zizai Guanyin conveys being at ease in Chinese. This boxwood Quan Yin sets that relaxed posture high above a tall openwork rock formation, contrasting the gathered figure with a more intricate landscape below.

Openwork in warm boxwood

The small-leaf boxwood options are listed by the maker as openwork carving with hand-finished details. The pierced rock formation is part of the wooden sculpture. Its narrow bridges, rounded cavities and layered ledges give the base much of its character, while the face and circular halo draw the eye upward.

Natural grain, small darker marks and differences in tone are part of the wood. The 20 cm and 25 cm carvings also differ in their rock contours; use the photograph for your selected size when choosing.
