Painted Boxwood Guanyin on a Lotus Seat

Description

The green shawl falls over orange robes, its dark scroll patterns continuing around the shoulders and down the back. Gold-colored edging follows the folds and catches the light around the crown, necklace and small vase. Against these bright colors, the warm wood tones of Guanyin’s face and hands stand out.

A Lotus Seat for Guanyin

Two rows of pink and white petals lift the cross-legged figure above a rounded wooden base. This seated lotus form gives the statue its Chinese name, Zuolian Guanyin (坐莲观音)—Guanyin seated on a lotus. The painted finish is called caihui (彩绘).

The vase and gently raised hand keep familiar Guanyin attributes visible within the colorful miniature. On this painted Kuan Yin, the face and hands retain their warm wood tones, contrasting with the green, orange and pink around them.

Small Enough to Keep Close

Carved in small-leaf boxwood, the statue measures approximately 10 cm high × 5.8 cm wide × 5.3 cm deep (3.9 × 2.3 × 2.1 in), including the lotus base. Its compact footprint leaves room for other objects on a personal altar. The patterned back and side folds also reward a closer look when displayed on an open shelf.

You receive one painted boxwood Guanyin with its lotus base, in the green, orange and pink color scheme shown. Small variations in wood tone and painted details give individual pieces their own character.

Lift from beneath the base, keeping pressure off the fingers, crown and vase. Display indoors away from damp conditions, direct sunlight and heat; dust with a soft, dry brush.
