Description
Guanyin sits above a crouching Hou, one leg folded and the other foot resting on a small lotus. The animal’s broad face, swept-back ears and curling tail give the base a lively silhouette; the figure above it remains composed. An openwork flame halo frames the crown and draws the eye upward.
Putuo Guanyin and the Mythical Hou
The name Putuo Guanyin connects this figure with Mount Putuo, the island off China’s eastern coast long associated with Guanyin. Putuoshan means Mount Putuo. Guanyin, also written Kuan Yin, is the bodhisattva of compassion—a meaningful presence in a space set aside for prayer or reflection.
The creature beneath the figure is a Hou, a mythical mount known here by its Chinese name Chaotian Hou (朝天吼). In this sculpture, its patterned saddle, clawed feet and raised tail are carefully visible from the sides as well as the front. The contrast between this spirited animal and Guanyin’s lowered gaze gives the composition its character.
Look Beyond the Front View
Turn to the side and the depth of the robes becomes clear. A narrow water vase lies across the left palm, while a leafy sprig is raised in the right hand. Raised floral scrollwork surrounds the crown, with pierced flame shapes along the halo’s outer edge. The reverse photographs show its broad backing plate and the robe falling toward the lotus seat above the Hou.
This copper Kuan Yin statue is cast using the lost-wax method in Tongling, Anhui. Its reddish-brown surface brings out the small raised details against darker recesses. Gentle light from one side lets the face, jewelry and openwork remain readable without flattening them in strong glare.
Allow Space for the Whole Sculpture
The total height is approximately 40 cm (15.7 in), including the halo and base. The base measures 29.5 × 17.5 cm (11.6 × 6.9 in), and the statue weighs approximately 6.5 kg (14.3 lb). Allow clearance around the halo and use a level surface capable of supporting the statue’s weight.
Your order includes one copper Putuo Guanyin statue with the Hou mount and flame halo shown. Keep it indoors and dry. Support it beneath the base when moving it; avoid lifting or pressing on the halo, fingers, vase or sprig. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive polish and acidic or salty cleaners.
