Description

Each foot rests on its own small lotus. Guanyin sits with one knee drawn up and the other lower, while a dragon climbs through the waves below. Its tail reappears among the clouds behind the figure, carrying the composition from the base to the tall carved backdrop.

At 17 cm (6.7 in) tall, the sculpture is best appreciated nearby: on a small home altar, a study shelf or a cabinet where you can see the face and fine scales. The warm golden wood brings out the rounded cloud scrolls, layered robe and slight smile. A view from the side reveals how much carving fits into its slender profile.

The Dragon-Riding Guanyin, Seated at Ease

The name brings together the dragon mount and Guanyin’s relaxed, uneven seated pose. This design is called Chenglong Zizai Guanyin (乘龙自在观音) in Chinese: chenglong means “riding a dragon,” while zizai conveys being at ease. Both parts are visible in the sculpture.

The waves recall the dragon’s association with rivers and lakes in Chinese tradition. Above them, the uneven seated pose gives Chenglong Zizai Kuan Yin a sense of ease. Each foot has its own lotus support, a small detail that connects the figure to the landscape below.

A Compact Boxwood Carving

Carved in small-leaf boxwood, with details refined by hand, the sculpture has a warm golden tone. Natural grain and differences in wood tone give individual pieces small variations. Light catches the rounded clouds and folds of the robe, revealing the depth of the carving.

Overall dimensions are approximately 17 × 7 × 4.3 cm (6.7 × 2.8 × 1.7 in), height × width × depth. One Guanyin sculpture and a gift box are included. The stone display support, teapot, loose beads and background figures shown in the photographs are styling props.

Keep the carving indoors, away from prolonged damp, direct sunlight and heating vents. A soft dry brush reaches between the clouds and dragon scales. Support the base when lifting, rather than the extended hand or the upper cloudwork.
