Description

Light travels across the carving: a narrow highlight along the cheek, a bright edge on the raised hand, then a broad curve over the lotus petals. This dark wood Guanyin statue rewards a closer look from the side and back as well as the front. The robe continues in long folds behind the figure, and the lotus seat rests on a second ring of carved petals.

The vase and the seated figure

The lotus throne supports Guanyin’s folded legs, with a second ring of petals beneath the seat. This is the composition described by Zuolian Guanyin (坐莲观音), “Guanyin seated on a lotus.” Kuan Yin and Guanyin are different English spellings for the same bodhisattva of compassion.

The pure-water vase is associated with compassion and wisdom in Guanyin imagery. In this wooden Kuan Yin, it rests upright in the left palm, balanced by the raised right hand. Both gestures remain open above the full double lotus throne.

Dark wood, visible grain

The material is sold by the supplier as heitan (黑檀木), a dark wood with the deep brown tones shown here. A glossy surface brings out the robe folds, facial features and grain on the back. Wood color and grain vary from piece to piece.

Choosing the height

The available nominal heights are 20 cm (7.9 in), 30 cm (11.8 in), 40 cm (15.7 in), 50 cm (19.7 in), 60 cm (23.6 in) and 70 cm (27.6 in). Heights are approximate; allow manual measuring differences of up to 2 cm (0.8 in).
