Description

A watchful dragon rises through curling waves beneath Guanyin’s feet. Above its textured scales, the robes fall in smooth, deep folds, and a rounded halo frames the lowered eyes. The contrast between the animated dragon and the composed figure is what makes this Dragon Guanyin statue so distinctive.

Guanyin with a Ruyi Scepter

The ruyi scepter is a traditional emblem of good wishes; its name means “as you wish.” It crosses the body above the animated dragon, giving this boxwood Kuan Yin a different held object from dragon figures carrying a pouring vase. For a gift marking a new beginning, the scepter makes the sentiment specific.

The Chinese product name, Chenglong Ruyi Guanyin (乘龙如意观音), describes this composition: Guanyin riding a dragon and holding a ruyi. The scepter, hanging beads and dragon are all carved details of the figure.

Boxwood, Carved to Be Seen from Every Side

This boxwood Kuan Yin is carved in the round and finished by hand. The front draws attention to the face and gently curved hands; at the back, the dragon’s scaled body runs beside the robes, with broad curls of ornament above it. The photographs show a warm golden tone and subtle grain, especially on the back of the halo.

At approximately 18 cm (7.1 in) high, the carving suits a small indoor altar, a bookshelf or a desk where its details can be seen close up. The statue measures approximately 7.3 cm (2.9 in) wide and 4.5 cm (1.8 in) deep. The material is small-leaf boxwood, as specified in the maker’s listing; wood tone and grain can vary between individual pieces.
