Description

The spaces in the rock backdrop let the setting show through the sculpture. Below, deep curls of water and layered robes give this Water Moon Guanyin statue with waves a much fuller composition than its small footprint suggests. Guanyin sits at the center, with a lowered gaze, an upturned palm beside the raised knee and the other hand resting on the rocky seat.

A Landscape for Reflection

Water Moon Guanyin evokes the bodhisattva contemplating the moon reflected in water. Here, the openwork rock and curling waves create a miniature setting for the seated figure. The Chinese design name Shuiyue Zizai Guanyin (水月自在观音) joins “water moon” with zizai, a sense of ease reflected in the relaxed posture.

In Buddhist imagery, moonlight on water invites reflection on the changing nature of appearances. The rocky setting and unhurried pose give that traditional Water Moon subject a sculptural form, with open spaces that let the surroundings become part of the view.

Size and Surface

The gray, granular surface picks out the edges of the openwork, the necklaces and the folds around the bent knee. The supplier identifies the material as Qingsha stone (青砂石).

Overall height: approximately 17.5 cm (6.9 in).
Length × width: approximately 8.2 × 4.2 cm (3.2 × 1.7 in).
One gray figure, including the sculpted rock backdrop and wave base shown.

Allow space around the openwork silhouette. Support the body and base when lifting, and dust the recesses with a soft, dry brush. A level indoor shelf is a practical setting; furniture and other photographic props are not included.

The Water Moon subject also appears in other compositions. See our Water Moon Guanyin collection to compare their shapes and proportions.
