Piaodai Guanyin Statue with Lotus and Flowing Ribbons

Description

The lotus sits upright on an open palm. Behind it, a porcelain ribbon sweeps past the shoulder and returns in a broad curl beside the knee. These open loops distinguish the Lotus Ribbon Guanyin statue from more closely draped seated figures; the supplied close-up photographs show both the hand and the face.

Piaodai: Flowing Ribbons

Piaodai (飘带) means flowing or floating ribbons, from the Chinese name for this design, Lianhua Piaodai Guanyin (莲花飘带观音). Here the ribbons are part of the porcelain sculpture. They frame a lowered gaze, a tall crown and an asymmetrical seated pose above overlapping lotus petals.

The Offered Lotus

An offered flower and an open palm give Piaodai Kwan Yin a welcoming gesture. The loops around the shoulders and knee leave the surrounding space visible through the sculpture, setting this design apart from seated figures whose robes remain close to the body.

Dehua White Porcelain

Made in Dehua, this white porcelain Guanyin statue belongs to the Blanc de Chine tradition. The glossy glaze catches the light along the ribbons, while shadows define the crown, necklace, robe folds and fine lines on the lotus petals.

Dimensions and Handling

Approximate dimensions are 32.5 cm (12.8 in) high by 19.5 cm (7.7 in) long and 19.5 cm (7.7 in) wide. Allow extra space around the projecting ribbons and lotus when choosing a shelf or altar. Lift from beneath the lotus base, avoiding pressure on the hands, flower and ribbons. Dust gently with a soft brush.
