Lotus-Holding Guanyin Statue

Description

The flower is the focus of this lotus-holding Guanyin statue. Both hands meet around the blossom, while a slender vase stands at the side. Below the crossed legs, large lotus petals rise above an open leaf whose curled edges form the base. The flower, petals and leaf carry the same botanical theme through the whole sculpture.

A Lotus Held with Care

The lotus grows through muddy water and opens above it. In Buddhist art it is associated with awakening, and more broadly with hope and renewal. Held between both hands here, the flower gives Heye Lianhua Kuan Yin a particular meaning as a gift of encouragement.

Heye Lianhua Guanyin brings together the Chinese words for lotus leaf and lotus flower. Both appear in the sculpture: the blossom held at the center, the petals beneath the folded legs and the leaf curling around the base.

Cream Tones or Painted Detail

The Warm Cream finish has softly shaded folds, a matching lotus seat and a pale yellow flower. In the painted Pink, Yellow & Teal version, a pink shawl falls over yellow garments with decorative motifs. Pink-tipped petals sit above a teal leaf, and dark hair and painted facial features give the face a more defined appearance.

Both versions measure approximately 42.5 cm (16.7 in) high, 25.5 cm (10.0 in) in length and 24.5 cm (9.6 in) in depth. Allow additional clearance around the crown and the projecting leaf edges when choosing a place for the statue.

Placing and Caring for the Statue

Set this lotus-holding Kuan Yin on a level surface with enough room around the base. Lift with support beneath the body and base, keeping pressure off the flower, fingers, vase, crown and leaf edges. Use a soft, dry brush for dusting; avoid abrasive cleaners and soaking.
