Guanyin Statue with an Openwork Flame Halo

Description

The open spaces are as much a part of this carving as the wood. Flowers and curling stems rise behind Guanyin, their pierced outlines set within a ring of flame-like points. A smaller round halo frames the face. From the front, these two layers form an elaborate surround for the softly lowered eyes and slight smile.

Guanyin sits on a rock seat with one leg folded across the robe and the other foot lowered onto a small lotus. The raised right hand is balanced by a loop of prayer beads held in the left, falling beside the knee. Turn the figure to see the depth of the floral carving and the openings cut through the back.

A Halo Around the Bodhisattva of Compassion

A halo expresses spiritual radiance in Buddhist art. This wooden Kwan Yin uses two: a small circle around the face and a larger flame-shaped surround filled with pierced flowers. The spaces between the stems make the background part of the view.

Huimu Wood and Fine Carved Detail

This sculpture is made in Huimu wood, with partial hand carving and hand-finished details. Its pale golden tone lets the recessed flowers, necklace and robe folds remain distinct without painted color. Wood grain and tone vary naturally between pieces.

Overall dimensions are approximately 25 × 12 × 9 cm (9.8 × 4.7 × 3.5 in), height × width × depth. Allow a little space above the pointed halo and beside its edges; a plain backdrop makes the openwork easier to appreciate.

One Guanyin sculpture and a gift box are included. The teapot, loose beads and other display props in the photographs are not part of the purchase.

Dust the openings with a soft, dry brush. Keep the wood indoors, away from direct sunlight, heaters and prolonged damp. Lift by supporting the base rather than the halo or hands.
