Description

There is something companionable about this Guanyin at Ease statue. One knee is drawn up close to the body, both hands gathered around it, while the other foot emerges from the folds of the robe. The figure feels settled and self-contained, with a small smile and gently lowered eyes.

Ease in a Small, Gathered Pose

The name Guanyin at Ease fits the figure’s close, settled pose: both hands gather around a raised knee, and a small smile softens the lowered gaze. Zizai Guanyin (自在观音) expresses the same sense of ease in Chinese. The tucked-in limbs distinguish this carving from more open seated compositions, giving it an intimate presence on a desk or small altar.

A Small Carving, Seen Up Close

The material is small-leaf boxwood. The figure is carved in the round and hand finished, with a smooth back that reveals the grain and deeply curling robe edges around the front. The photographs show a warm golden tone and visible grain; natural grain and shade will differ slightly from piece to piece.

The carving is approximately 9.5 cm (3.7 in) high, 5.5 cm (2.2 in) wide and 5.5 cm (2.2 in) deep. The hand-held photograph gives a useful sense of scale. A cotton canvas pouch is included with the statue; the loose beads, plant and separate display stand in the photographs and video are styling props.

Display indoors, away from direct sunlight and heating or air-conditioning outlets. Remove dust with a soft, dry brush or cloth and avoid wet wiping. Lift from the body and base, taking care around the crown and projecting robe details.
