Description

The face is the focus of this Guanyin head sculpture. Lowered eyes and softly curved lips sit beneath a swept-back hairline and a crown carved with a small seated Buddha. Highlights follow the brow and cheeks, revealing reddish-brown grain within the dark wood.

The portrait is presented as a complete small sculpture: head and headdress above a lotus support, with a round, stepped base below. Its smooth reverse offers a different view of the wood and the folds of the hood. At approximately 15 cm (5.9 in) high, with a footprint of 7 × 7 cm (2.8 × 2.8 in), it fits a modest display shelf or a place set aside for reflection.

The Words Beneath the Lotus

The base bears the Chinese inscription Pudu Zhongsheng (普渡众生), expressing the Buddhist wish to guide all beings beyond suffering. It connects the portrait with Guanyin’s compassionate identity. Guanyin, also known as Kuan Yin, is the bodhisattva of compassion in Chinese Buddhist tradition; the little Buddha in the crown is a familiar identifying feature in Guanyin imagery.

Carved in heitan wood, this piece combines hand-worked details around the crown and lotus with broader, polished surfaces across the face and hood. The brown tone and grain vary naturally from piece to piece. The listing includes one Guanyin head sculpture with the lotus and inscribed base shown.

Display indoors, away from damp, direct sun and strong heat. Use a soft, dry brush for the crown and lettering, and a dry cloth for the broader surfaces. Lift from the base rather than the carved crown.
