Guanyin at Ease Statue on Waves in Boxwood

Description

The waves are the liveliest part of this small carving. They rise and turn beneath a broad lotus leaf, leaving openings through which light can pass. Above them, Guanyin sits at ease: the right knee raised, the arm resting across it and the other foot lowered onto a lotus blossom. A slight smile and downcast eyes give the figure a composed presence.

At Ease Above the Waves

This Guanyin at ease statue takes its Chinese design name, Shuilang Zizai Guanyin (水浪自在观音), from that pairing of movement and repose. Shuilang refers to water and waves; zizai conveys being at ease. The raised knee and resting arm belong to the long-established “royal ease” pose in Guanyin sculpture.

Guanyin, also written Kuan Yin, is the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion. Here, the still figure above the curling water offers a gentle reminder of composure amid life’s movement. It is a meaningful subject for a personal altar, or a quiet companion on a desk where you pause to read or reflect.

A Carving to Look Around

Made in small-leaf boxwood, the sculpture has a warm golden tone and fine grain visible across the broad surfaces. Turn it slightly and the design changes: the long ribbons and robe folds open into silhouette, while the back reveals the veined lotus leaf beneath the seat. A small Buddha in the crown and the beaded chest ornament reward a closer view.

This boxwood Kuan Yin measures approximately 15 cm high × 9.8 cm wide × 5 cm deep (5.9 × 3.9 × 2.0 in). Its shallow footprint suits a small indoor display. Leave room around the sides so the openwork waves and trailing robe edges remain visible.

Wood grain and tone vary naturally, and measurements are approximate. Place the statue on a level indoor surface away from water, strong sunlight and heat. Support it beneath the base when moving it; use a soft, dry brush to dust the narrow openings and folds.
