Boxwood Dragon Guanyin with a Pouring Vase

A slender stream connects Guanyin’s tilted vase to the dragon below. Her lowered gaze and flowing robes bring stillness to the twisting body and lifted head at her feet. Carved in boxwood, the figure is offered in natural wood tones or with fine gold-painted accents.

Description

The dragon turns upward as water flows from Guanyin’s vase. Its body curls around the base and rises behind the robe, giving this Dragon Guanyin statue movement from every side. Seen closely, the carved stream, small leafy sprig and overlapping scales become the details that hold the attention.

Why Dragon Guanyin?

Dragon Guanyin brings the compassionate bodhisattva together with the coiled dragon beneath her feet. The dragon’s upward gaze meets the stream flowing from the vase. The Chinese name Long Guanyin (龙观音) means “Dragon Guanyin”; Chenglong Guanyin (乘龙观音) describes Guanyin riding a dragon. Kuan Yin is another English spelling of Guanyin.

In Chinese tradition, dragons are associated with rivers, lakes and the power of water, while Guanyin’s pure-water vase symbolizes compassion and wisdom. Here, a carved stream flows from the tilted vase toward the dragon’s open mouth. Her calm expression above its twisting body gives the carving a balance of gentleness and strength.

Two ways to see the carving

The natural finish keeps the warm boxwood tones and grain in view. In the gold-accented finish, painted lines pick out details on the crown, robes and dragon. Wood tone and grain vary, and carving details can differ between sizes.

Carved in small-leaf boxwood, the figure is worked in the round and finished by hand. Each size and finish has its own front-view photograph. The close-ups and video show the natural finish.

Size and placement

17 cm (6.7 in), natural: approximately 17 × 6.5 × 6 cm (6.7 × 2.6 × 2.4 in), height × width × depth.
21 cm (8.3 in), natural or gold accents: approximately 21 × 8 × 7 cm (8.3 × 3.1 × 2.8 in).
30 cm (11.8 in), natural or gold accents: height only; confirm the footprint if placing it in a fitted niche.

One sculpture in the selected size and finish is supplied with a gift box. Tables and other styling props in the source photography are not included. Display indoors, away from direct sun, heaters and prolonged damp. Use a soft, dry brush for the recesses and lift carefully from the base rather than the sprig, vase or carved stream.
