Description

A tied sash draws the long folds together at the waist, while the slightly inclined head and raised hand give this Lotus Pedestal Guanyin statue a sense of movement. The Lotus Beneath Guanyin’s Feet

Lotus Pedestal Guanyin is named for the flower beneath the figure’s feet. Rounded petals lift the standing body above a low foot, with both bare feet visible on the upper surface. Liantai (莲台) is the Chinese word for that lotus pedestal; here it names the base, not a cross-legged sitting posture.

The lotus is associated with awakening in Buddhist art, rising above the muddy water in which it grows. On this Liantai Guan Yin, the flower forms a low pedestal beneath a long standing body. The inclined head and gathered robe give the figure its own asymmetrical movement.
